Long Range Bombers, Average Distance of Shots

20 Jun

With the data about distance of all shots in the last 3 years [including playoffs] available on InfiniteDemand.com I couldn’t resist from writing a post full of tables with information about
Players who had The Highest Average Distance of Shots Attempted. For more fun I also added the opposite list: Players who were Living in the Paint [minimum 500 shots attempted].
BTW, Joel Przybilla had an amazing average distance of 1,14 feet but he had only 417 FGA.

Player FGA Average Distance Player FGA Average Distance
Steve Novak 569 23,36 DeAndre Jordan 717 1,71
James Jones 696 22,80 Erick Dampier 625 2,12
Eddie House 1429 21,32 Andris Biedrins 936 2,54
Daequan Cook 1177 21,26 Greg Oden 524 2,59
DeShawn Stevenson 809 20,57 Tyson Chandler 1001 2,66
Sasha Vujacic 1271 20,31 Ben Wallace 609 2,75
Mike Bibby 2505 20,28 Greg Monroe 549 3,10

Raja Bell 1212 19,39 Joakim Noah 1522 3,40
Jason Kapono 933 19,34 Leon Powe 525 3,55

Rudy Fernandez 1708 19,07 Kwame Brown 676 3,94
James Posey 1148 18,97 Dwight Howard 3344 3,97
Keith Bogans 1006 18,88 Kendrick Perkins 1416 4,06
J.J. Redick 1494 18,83 Andrew Bynum 1978 4,06
Michael Finley 927 18,69 JaVale McGee 1298 4,18
Bobby Simmons 561 18,58 Craig Smith 1098 4,19
Mickael Pietrus 1579 18,52 Andrew Bogut 1965 4,36
Daniel Gibson 1502 18,47 Chris Wilcox 812 4,46
Wesley Johnson 682 18,46 Nene 2278 4,77

OK, that’s not exactly a discovery that three-point shooters and big guys without any range would be on opposite sides of that list but IMHO it’s still great trivia stuff that Steve Novak and DeAndre Jordan are the best at something ;-)

And just for comparison sake here’s the list of players with simply the most shots attempted in that period.

Player FGA Average Distance Player FGA Average Distance
Kobe Bryant 6123 14,18 Amare Stoudemire 3790 7,94
LeBron James 5513 13,17 Paul Pierce 3774 13,83
Dwyane Wade 5268 11,49 Chris Bosh 3768 10,27
Kevin Durant 5064 14,03 Jason Terry 3763 16,61
Dirk Nowitzki 4963 13,79 Danny Granger 3762 15,37
Derrick Rose 4799 11,70 Pau Gasol 3702 6,72
Carmelo Anthony 4758 11,73 David West 3636 9,83
Joe Johnson 4532 14,07 Zach Randolph 3620 8,08
LaMarcus Aldridge 4136 10,48 Ray Allen 3609 16,53
Russell Westbrook 4079 9,70 Stephen Jackson 3542 14,16

Westbrook got a lot of criticism for his shot selection but at least he knows his place on the court…
plus it’s just another argument that Kobe became jump-shooter and Durant needs to get stronger.

As a bonus and a follow-up to my previous post about buzzer-beaters from deep I’d like to mention some players who stand out for different reasons…

    Intersting stuff to see.

It may look like Westbrook knows his place on the court based on average shot distance but if you look at his high raw quality of mid-rangers per game and his low FG% from 10-23 feet, it will look quite different, at least to me.

Well, 9-10 feet from the basket could still be “too far away” if someone can’t shoot ;-)
But IMHO it is interesting that overall he looked more like PF than like other guards.

Westbrook would look a lot better by average shot distance and in general if he took 3-5 less mid-range shoots per game by kicking it out when he can’t get to the rim with an advantage.

If only NBA introduced 4 point shot – Marco Belinelli would be a star with eFG% close to 60% ;-)
