With the data about distance of all shots in the last 3 years [including playoffs] available on InfiniteDemand.com I couldn’t resist from writing a post full of tables with information about
Players who had The Highest Average Distance of Shots Attempted. For more fun I also added the opposite list: Players who were Living in the Paint [minimum 500 shots attempted].
BTW, Joel Przybilla had an amazing average distance of 1,14 feet but he had only 417 FGA.

OK, that’s not exactly a discovery that three-point shooters and big guys without any range would be on opposite sides of that list but IMHO it’s still great trivia stuff that Steve Novak and DeAndre Jordan are the best at something ;-)
And just for comparison sake here’s the list of players with simply the most shots attempted in that period.
Player | FGA | Average Distance | – | Player | FGA | Average Distance |
Kobe Bryant | 6123 | 14,18 | – | Amare Stoudemire | 3790 | 7,94 |
LeBron James | 5513 | 13,17 | – | Paul Pierce | 3774 | 13,83 |

LaMarcus Aldridge | 4136 | 10,48 | – | Ray Allen | 3609 | 16,53 |
Russell Westbrook | 4079 | 9,70 | – | Stephen Jackson | 3542 | 14,16 |
Westbrook got a lot of criticism for his shot selection but at least he knows his place on the court…
plus it’s just another argument that Kobe became jump-shooter and Durant needs to get stronger.
As a bonus and a follow-up to my previous post about buzzer-beaters from deep I’d like to mention some players who stand out for different reasons…

Or am I the only one who finds that entertaining?

Intersting stuff to see.
It may look like Westbrook knows his place on the court based on average shot distance but if you look at his high raw quality of mid-rangers per game and his low FG% from 10-23 feet, it will look quite different, at least to me.

Well, 9-10 feet from the basket could still be “too far away” if someone can’t shoot ;-)
But IMHO it is interesting that overall he looked more like PF than like other guards.

Westbrook would look a lot better by average shot distance and in general if he took 3-5 less mid-range shoots per game by kicking it out when he can’t get to the rim with an advantage.

If only NBA introduced 4 point shot – Marco Belinelli would be a star with eFG% close to 60% ;-)
