What was unique in NBA on May 17th?

18 May

Since I started analysing box scores regularly for FB in 2004 I was surprised how often unique stat-lines occurred and it’s a series designed to celebrate that fact. The rules are simple: it has to be something that never happened in the last 20 playoffs [over 1500 games] and less than 25 times during last 25 regular season games [there were over 55000]. Incidentally it’s a tribute to Basketball-Reference.com for great tools.

In Game 1 of Western Conference Finals http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/201105170DAL.html
Dirk Nowitzki had once-in-a-lifetime performance – it was unique in at least three ways:

Dirk Nowitzki made all of his 24 Free Throw Attempts.
Proof on BRef’s Game Finder. It hasn’t happend during last 25 seasons! Proof on BRef’s Game Finder.
The closest one was 23 for 23 by Dominique Wilkins in 1992 – boxscore.
In the playoffs the closest one was 21 for 21 by Paul Pierce in 2003 – boxscore.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 48 points on 15 Field Goal Attempts.
Proof on BRef’s Game Finder. It hasn’t happend during last 25 seasons! Proof on BRef’s Game Finder.
The closest one was 43 pts on 14 FGA by Alonzo Mourning in 2000 – boxscore.
In the playoffs the closest one was 41 pts on 14 FGA 21 by Terry Porter in 1992 – boxscore.

Dirk Nowitzki had 48 points with 4 blocks and he played 41 minutes..
Proof on BRef’s Game Finder. It happened 3 times during last 25 RS. Proof on BRef’s Game Finder.

Truly spectacular game, thank you Dirk for that one!

Surprisingly it wasn’t the only unique event on his own team…
Jason Kidd 11 assists and 3 steals but he had only 3 points… and it was a three.
Proof on BRef’s Game Finder. It happened 10 times during last 25 RS – Proof on BRef’s Game Finder.
Kidd is 4 times on that list so it’s kind of his speciality ;-)

Jose Barea scored 21 points and added an assist in only 16 minutes.
Proof on BRef’s Game Finder. It happened 7 times during last 25 RS – Proof on BRef’s Game Finder.
Is he an ultimate X-Factor of this playoffs or what? And how awesome was this game, huh? ;-)

BTW, if you are wondering, Kevin Durant’s 40 points on 18 Field Goal Attempts and his another really impressive display of versatility wasn’t as unique as you may think: it happened 7 other times in the playoffs since 1991 Proof on BRef’s Game Finder… obviously including Dirk’s performance ;-)

And the last time when two players had over 40 points in one playoff game was on May 11th 2009 – http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200905110DAL.html… and one of those players was Dirk ;-)
